Great Indian Festival & Big Billion Days 2026: Best Cards
Updated as of 6 Oct 2026. Amazon’s Great Indian Festival starts 8 Oct. Flipkart’s Big Billion Days starts 9 Oct, with early access on 8 Oct. We checked both sale pages on 6 Oct; bank-offer caps appear at checkout, so confirm them there.
Every October, India’s two biggest shopping sites fight it out: Amazon’s Great Indian Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days. For most of us, “the Great Indian Sale” means both. Here’s where these sales came from, how they’ve changed, which card to use this year, and the one rule that matters more than any coupon: the best deals go in the first 24–48 hours.
How it started: a crash, an apology and a new habit
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2014 | Flipkart’s first “Big Billion Day” on 6 Oct sold about $100 million (₹615 crore) in 10 hours. The site crashed for hours, and founders Sachin and Binny Bansal emailed customers an apology the next day. |
| 2015 | Big Billion Days becomes a 5-day, app-only sale (13–17 Oct). Amazon runs its first festive mega sale on the same dates, the start of what it now calls the Great Indian Festival. |
| 2016 | Amazon gives Prime members early access to a big sale for the first time: 30 minutes. |
| 2018 | Walmart buys 77% of Flipkart for $16 billion. Flipkart Plus launches with early sale access. |
| 2019 | New FDI rules for e-commerce take effect on 1 Feb (more below). The era of anything-goes discounting ends. |
| 2023–25 | Rules against “dark patterns” such as fake urgency and hidden fees. GST rates cut to 5% and 18% in Sep 2025. |
| 2026 | Prime early access is usually 24 hours. Flipkart gives Plus, Black and Flipkart credit card members a full day’s head start. Both sales start about two weeks later than last year (23 Sep 2025). |
Why the deep discounts disappeared
Until 2018, a lot of the craziest sale prices came from big “preferred sellers” linked to the platforms themselves. Then the government’s Press Note 2 (effective 1 Feb 2019) said a marketplace with foreign investment:
- can’t own or control the stock its sellers sell,
- can’t directly or indirectly influence sale prices,
- can’t demand exclusive deals from brands.
Amazon wound down its two biggest affiliated sellers, Cloudtail (2022) and Appario, and the Competition Commission spent years investigating both platforms over exclusive phone launches and deep discounting. Discounts didn’t vanish, but the money behind them changed. Today a big chunk of your “sale price” is a bank’s instant discount, not the platform’s. That’s why the card you pay with matters more than ever.
What I’ve seen: the first two days are the sale
From my own shopping over the last few years, since these rules came in: the early-access day (Prime or Plus) and the first public day are when the real deals appear. I’ve regularly found 20–40% off on those two days, but you have to hunt. The good ones are limited-stock deals and they sell out in minutes. From day three onwards, there are still discounts, just not many worth getting excited about.
One caution: not every “discount” is real. A price-tracker audit of 325 products across the 2024 and 2025 sales found about 1 in 5 had been marked up just before the sale. So check a product’s price history before you trust the “60% off” badge.
Pehle aao, pehle pao. (First come, first served.)
Amazon Great Indian Festival 2026: which card

| Card | What you get | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| SBI credit or debit card | 10% instant discount, including credit card EMI | Big purchases: phones, laptops, TVs, appliances. This is the best deal on Amazon this year |
| Amazon Pay ICICI | 5% back with Prime, 3% without, no cap | Orders below the SBI minimum, after you hit the SBI cap, or if you don’t have an SBI card |
| Amazon Pay Later | 10% cashback on selected purchases | Only on items Amazon tags for it |
| Amazon Pay balance | ₹20 back on fashion, beauty and home orders of ₹300+ | Small orders without a bank offer |
Prime members usually get the sale 24 hours early. Amazon hasn’t announced the exact time this year, so keep the app open from the night of 7 Oct.
Flipkart Big Billion Days 2026: which card

| Card | What you get | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Axis Bank or ICICI Bank credit card | Up to 10% instant discount | Any big purchase on Flipkart |
| Flipkart Axis Bank card | 10% savings, plus early access on 8 Oct | Best card on Flipkart this year if you have it |
| super.money UPI | 10% cashback on your first transaction | One small order |
Amazon Pay gift cards or the card directly?
During the sale, pay with the card directly. Bank instant discounts don’t work with Amazon Pay balance. SBI’s own terms for Amazon’s July sale put it plainly: if you select Amazon Pay balance, even for part of the payment, you don’t get the bank offer. Expect the same rule now.
| ₹30,000 phone on Amazon | You save |
|---|---|
| SBI credit card, 10% instant discount | ₹3,000 |
| Amazon Pay ICICI, 5% back (Prime) | ₹1,500 |
| Amazon Pay balance bought at 1% off on SmartBuy | ₹300 |
The gift card trick from our guide to cards on a ₹30–50k salary still wins for bills, groceries and everyday shopping all year. It just loses to a 10% bank discount on sale day. Use your Amazon Pay balance for small orders under the bank offer’s minimum, items with no bank offer, and after the sale ends.
Your sale-day plan
- Make your list now. Add the items to your cart and wishlist, and note today’s price.
- Check price history so you know a real deal when you see one.
- Save your SBI, Axis or ICICI card on the right site before the sale, so checkout is quick.
- Be online for early access and day one. Prime and Plus are worth having for these two days alone.
- Buy once, buy right. If you missed a deal, don’t panic-buy a worse one on day five.
Sasta roye baar baar, mehenga roye ek baar. (Buy cheap and you cry again and again; buy right and you cry only once.)
DealUni take
On Amazon, the SBI card is the one to use for anything big. On Flipkart, the Flipkart Axis card, or any Axis or ICICI credit card. Skip the gift card route during the sale and swipe the card directly. Most of all, be there on early-access day and day one with a list in hand: after that, the sale is mostly noise. And if a deal pushes you to buy something you didn’t need, it isn’t a deal.
Cart soch samajh ke bharo. (Fill your cart wisely.)
