Air India Bank EMI Offers: Is ₹10,000 Off Worth the Interest?

Updated as of 12 Oct 2026 (added: EMI bookings usually earn no reward points; Amex Platinum earns 10X on airindia.com). Terms from Air India’s Exclusive Deals page. Interest examples assume 15% a year; check your own card’s EMI rate.

Air India is emailing members about “savings of up to ₹10,000”. The catch is in the small print: every one of these bank offers works only if you convert the ticket to an EMI, and the discount applies to the base fare only. Once you add EMI interest, the real saving is much smaller, and on a big business-class ticket you can end up paying more. And if you play the points and miles game, there’s a bigger catch: EMI bookings usually earn no reward points.

Who this is for: people who want a straight cash discount, don’t hold a premium rewards card, or don’t collect points and miles. If you pay with a card that earns well on flights, you’ll usually come out ahead by paying in full and keeping the points.

Here’s the detail.

The offers

Minimum booking: ₹5,000 domestic (₹6,000 for ICICI) and ₹25,000 international. Credit card EMI only, on airindia.com or the Air India app, for Air India and Air India Express flights.

The rules that bite

  • Base fare only. Taxes and fees don’t count, so 12% of the fare is less than 12% of what you pay.
  • EMI only. Normal card payments, debit cards, UPI and net banking don’t qualify. Corporate and business cards are excluded.
  • Once a month per customer (once per card per month for ICICI).
  • No multi-city bookings, no infants on the booking, no paying with points, and no stacking with other codes.
  • No reward points. Most banks don’t give reward points on EMI transactions, so you give up the points or miles your card would have earned on the full fare. Check your card’s terms.
  • EMI costs. HDFC charges a ₹299 + GST processing fee plus interest. Closing the EMI early costs a 3% pre-closure fee plus interest, so you can’t just pay it off next month.

The maths

ExampleEconomy abroadBusiness abroad
Ticket price₹80,000 (base fare ₹55,000)₹2,50,000 (base fare ₹2,00,000)
12% discount₹6,600₹10,000 (capped)
Interest + GST, 3-month EMIabout ₹2,200about ₹7,100
Interest + GST + fee, 6-month EMIabout ₹4,100about ₹12,700
Real saving₹2,500–4,400₹2,900 at best; a ₹2,700 loss on 6 months
DealUni estimates at 15% a year interest on a reducing balance, with 18% GST on interest. The 6-month row includes HDFC’s ₹299 + GST fee. Actual rates vary by card. These figures ignore the reward points you give up; see the next section.

The pattern is clear: the ₹10,000 cap is hit only on big fares, and big fares carry big interest. The sweet spot is an international economy ticket on Axis or SBI with a 3-month EMI. On HDFC and ICICI you’re forced into 6 months, which eats about half the discount.

If you collect points, you lose

What you earn on a flight paid in full depends on your card and where you book. Booking direct with the airline, premium cards earn from about 3.3% (HDFC Infinia’s base rate) upwards. Book through your bank’s travel portal, such as HDFC SmartBuy or Axis Travel EDGE, and accelerated rewards can take it to as much as 24% on some cards, within monthly caps. Convert to EMI and you usually earn nothing.

Note that the EMI offer only works on airindia.com or the Air India app, so you can’t combine it with a bank portal’s accelerated points.

Amex Platinum Charge Card: 10X on airindia.com. Air India is an Amex RewardXcelerator partner, so the Platinum Card earns 10 Membership Rewards points per ₹40 (1 base + 9 bonus) on bookings made on airindia.com or the Air India app, with no cap, until 31 July 2027. Centurion earns 10X, Platinum Reserve 5X and Platinum Corporate 2X. That ticket of ₹80,000 earns 20,000 points: worth about ₹11,600 even as Taj vouchers (₹0.58 a point), and more if you transfer to Marriott (1:1) or Virgin Atlantic (5:4). That’s 14.5% back or better, about three times what the EMI offer saves, on the same website, with no interest.
₹80,000 economy ticketPay in full on a rewards cardAxis or SBI 3-month EMI offer
Discount–₹6,600
Interest + GST–about –₹2,200
Reward points earned (3.3% direct, 14.5%+ on Amex Platinum, up to 24% via bank portals)₹2,640–19,200Usually ₹0
You end up ahead by₹2,640–19,200about ₹4,400
DealUni estimate. The reward value depends on your card, the portal, its monthly cap and how you redeem the points. Once your card earns about 5.5% or more on the booking, paying in full wins.

On business class it isn’t close: the EMI offer already loses money on a 6-month plan, and you give up the points too.

Better options without EMI

  • FLYAI: up to ₹3,000 off, no bank tie-up needed (check its terms at checkout).
  • UPIPROMO / NBPROMO: up to ₹2,000 off with UPI or net banking.
  • Amex Platinum Charge Card: 10X Membership Rewards on airindia.com, uncapped till 31 Jul 2027. If you hold it, this beats every EMI offer.
  • Your card’s rewards: a premium card earning 3–5% back on airline spends can match a 3% net EMI saving with no interest risk.

DealUni take

This offer is for cashback-minded travellers without a premium rewards card. For them, an international economy ticket on Axis or SBI with a 3-month EMI saves about ₹4,000. If you’re in the points and miles game, skip it: pay in full on your best travel card and keep the points. Nobody should use it for business class, where the interest can wipe out the discount.

Discount dikhta bada hai, byaaj chhupa rehta hai. (The discount looks big; the interest stays hidden.)
