Amex India Outsources Platinum Concierge: Why It Stings
Updated as of 9 Oct 2026. Based on Amex India’s emails to Platinum Card members (1 Sep and 8 Oct 2026), Amex India’s Platinum Card pages and its insurance page.
For years, the best thing about the Amex Platinum Charge Card in India wasn’t the metal or the lounges. It was the phone number on the back. You called, a person who knew the card picked up, and your Taj stay, Fine Hotels + Resorts booking or last-minute dinner table was sorted. That team is now being handed to an outside company. And going by how Amex India has treated its card members lately, we’re not expecting it to get better.
What Amex has told Platinum members
Amex’s 8 Oct email says its “long-standing global partner” Aspire Lifestyles India Private Limited will take over Travel and Lifestyle Services on the Platinum Card from 9 AM on 15 November 2026. The 1 Sep email had said 11 October. Today the service is run by Amex’s own Indian company, American Express (India) Private Limited.
| Service | What happens |
|---|---|
| New hotel and flight bookings | Unavailable until 15 Nov. This includes the International Airline Program, Fine Hotels + Resorts, The Hotel Collection, Meet & Greet and Kaizen |
| Existing travel bookings | Current team helps until 15 Nov, except 1–2 Nov, when there’s no support at all |
| Lifestyle (restaurants, flowers, golf) | Current team until 8 Nov, then unavailable 9–14 Nov |
| From 15 Nov, 9 AM | Aspire Lifestyles handles all travel and lifestyle requests |
Look at what that means. A card that costs ₹66,000 + GST (₹77,880) a year can’t make a single new Fine Hotels + Resorts or Taj booking through its own travel desk for weeks, and the pause runs straight through Diwali (8 Nov). Amex hasn’t offered any fee credit for it.
How good it used to be
Credit where it’s due. The Platinum travel desk was the reason many of us paid the fee:
- Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection bookings came with breakfast, upgrades and hotel credits, booked by an agent who knew the rules.
- Taj and Oberoi offers and the Kaizen voucher were all booked through the same line.
- International Airline Program fares in premium cabins were a phone call away.
- One team handled both: a hotel in Udaipur in the morning, a restaurant table in Mumbai that night.
It worked because it was Amex’s own team. Outsourcing doesn’t have to mean worse, but it usually means scripts, ticket numbers and agents who serve several brands at once. The 1–2 Nov blackout on existing bookings is not a promising start.
How it’s been going lately
The concierge change isn’t happening in isolation. In the last few weeks, Amex India has:
- Paused new card applications while it moves to a new technology platform.
- Announced the end of points pooling across cards and a points freeze for late payers (see our post on the changes). On 9 Oct Amex emailed again: these changes and the new online account now start on 15 Nov, not 11 Oct, and “a few services may be temporarily unavailable”.
- Closed Reward Multiplier and moved vouchers to ShopWise with caps and fees.
- Cut Platinum Travel lounge access and milestones.
Each change on its own is defensible. Together, they read like a card company cutting the cost of looking after its members.
More insurance calls than service
Here’s what bothers us most. While the travel desk is being cut back, the sales calls haven’t stopped. On our own Platinum Card we get several calls a month trying to sell us health, life or motor insurance. If that’s your experience too, tell us in the comments.
Amex’s own insurance page explains why:
| What Amex’s page says | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Amex Banking Corp. is an IRDAI corporate agent (No. CA0066, valid to 31 Mar 2028) | Amex is licensed to sell insurance from ICICI Lombard, Tata AIG, Tata AIA, PNB MetLife and Future Generali |
| Commission of up to 25% of premium on general insurance | On a ₹40,000 health policy, that’s up to ₹10,000 to Amex |
| Commission of up to 67% of the first-year premium on life insurance | On a ₹50,000 first-year life premium, that’s up to ₹33,500 to Amex |
| The callback form’s consent lets Amex share your data with telemarketing partners and overrides your Do Not Call registration | Ticking that box once means DND no longer protects you from these calls |
Up to 67% of a first-year life premium is a lot of money. That explains the calls far better than any “exclusive offer for valued Card Members” does. A premium card should spend its effort on the members paying for it, not on cross-selling to them.
How to stop the insurance calls
- Tell Amex in writing. Call or use secure chat and ask them to mark your profile “no marketing calls, SMS or email”. Note the reference number.
- Don’t fill in insurance callback forms or say “yes, call me later”. That’s the consent that gets around DND.
- Register on DND with your mobile operator (send “FULLY BLOCK” to 1909, or use the TRAI DND app). It won’t stop calls you’ve consented to, but it stops most others.
- Escalate if it continues. Use Amex’s grievance redressal process. If there’s no fix within 30 days, complain to the RBI Ombudsman; pushy selling of third-party products is covered.
What Platinum members should do now
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Holding an Amex travel booking for Oct–Nov | Call before 31 Oct for any changes. There’s no support on 1–2 Nov |
| Planning a Fine Hotels + Resorts stay over Diwali | You can’t book it through Amex until 15 Nov. Book directly with the hotel using your Marriott, Hilton or ITC status instead |
| Wanting a restaurant or golf booking for 9–14 Nov | Book before 8 Nov, or book directly |
| Up for renewal soon | Ask for a retention offer and mention the service gap. Decide after you’ve tried Aspire for a month or two |
| Getting insurance calls | Follow the four steps above |
DealUni take
Amex India built its premium reputation on service, not on reward rates; HDFC and Axis have long beaten it on raw value. Strip out the service and what’s left is a ₹77,880 card that earns well on Marriott and Taj and not much else. We’ll test the new Aspire desk after 15 November and report back honestly. If it’s good, we’ll say so. Until then, don’t renew the Platinum for the concierge alone.
Naam bada, darshan chhote. (A big name, but less and less behind it.)
