Axis Burgundy Private Debit: Lounge Spend Rule, Fewer Points
Updated as of 27 Oct 2026. From Axis Bank’s revised terms for the Burgundy Private debit card and its Burgundy debit card terms, both checked 27 Oct 2026. MCC codes are copied exactly from Axis’s table; the plain-English descriptions and merchant examples come from our MCC Lookup.
Axis is tightening the Burgundy Private debit card from 1 December 2026. Domestic lounges and the BookMyShow offer will need card spends, and twelve spend categories will stop earning EDGE Reward points. Axis has listed the exact merchant category codes (MCCs) it is excluding, so here is what each one means and what still earns.
TL;DR
- Lounges and BookMyShow: from 1 Dec, you need ₹10,000 of debit card spends in the previous 3 calendar months. UPI, wallet reloads, credit card bill payments and cash withdrawals don’t count.
- EDGE Rewards: the earn rate stays at 8 points per ₹200 in India and 10 per ₹200 abroad, but insurance, tax and government, fuel, cabs and metro, rent, utilities, education, jewellery, wallets and more earn nothing.
- Still earning: flights, hotels, IRCTC trains, dining, groceries, shopping and spends abroad.
- No change: 20 international lounge visits a year, golf, insurance cover, limits and the 3.5% forex markup.
Lounges and BookMyShow now need ₹10,000 in spends
| Benefit | What you get | From 1 Dec 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic lounges | 8 visits a quarter for you + 4 for a guest | ⚠️ Only if you spent ₹10,000 on the card in the previous 3 calendar months |
| BookMyShow | Buy one, get one: 6 movie tickets a month (up to ₹650 each) and 4 non-movie tickets (up to ₹1,000 each) | ⚠️ Same ₹10,000 rule |
| International lounges | 20 visits a year, shared with guests; you must be there | ✅ No spend rule |
What doesn’t count towards the ₹10,000: UPI payments, wallet reloads, credit card bill payments and cash withdrawals. In practice, that means swiping or tapping the card itself, in shops or online. ₹10,000 over 3 months is about ₹3,400 a month, which most Burgundy Private customers will cross on groceries or dining alone.
EDGE Rewards: the excluded MCC codes
Every card payment carries a 4-digit merchant category code. From 1 Dec, Burgundy Private debit spends coded under any of these earn no EDGE points:
| Category | MCC codes (as listed by Axis) | What it usually is |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance, financial institutions, foreign currency | 4829, 6012, 6050, 6051, 6211, 6300, 6381, 6399, 6531, 6532, 6533, 6534, 6535, 6611, 6760, 72726 | Insurance premiums (LIC, HDFC Life, Star Health, Acko, Policybazaar), money transfers, forex card loads, brokerages and other quasi-cash |
| Charities | 8398 | NGOs and donation sites (GiveIndia, PM CARES) |
| Government services | 8111, 9211, 9222, 9223, 9311, 9312, 9313, 9314, 9399, 9402, 9405, 9411 | Income tax and GST, traffic challans, passport and Aadhaar fees, municipal and property tax, court fees, legal services |
| Jewellery | 5094, 5944 | Tanishq, CaratLane, Kalyan, local jewellers, digital gold, even fashion jewellery like Kushal’s |
| Education | 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299, 8493, 8494 | School and college fees, coaching, Coursera, Udemy, BYJU’S, upGrad |
| Cash withdrawal | 6010, 6011 | ATM and bank-counter cash |
| Fuel | 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 | Petrol pumps (IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, Shell), fuel dealers |
| Transport | 4111, 4119, 4121, 4131, 4214, 4789, 4784 | Uber, Ola and Rapido, metro cards, buses (redBus, AbhiBus), FASTag tolls, ambulances, movers |
| Wallet | 4814, 6540 | Wallet loads (Amazon Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, MobiKwik) and mobile recharges |
| Visa | 9700, 9701, 9702, 9950 | Card network and intra-company codes; rarely seen by customers |
| Rent | 6513 | Rent through NoBroker, Housing.com, RedGiraffe |
| Utilities | 4814, 4816, 4899, 4900 | Jio and Airtel bills, broadband, DTH, electricity, piped gas, Netflix and Indian OTT apps |
The surprise is transport. Most cards exclude fuel, rent and wallets, but here cabs, metro and buses go too. Trains on IRCTC use a different code (4112) and aren’t on the list, and neither are airlines, hotels or travel sites.
What still earns 8 or 10 points per ₹200
- Travel: airlines, hotels, IRCTC trains, MakeMyTrip and other travel sites.
- Everyday: restaurants, Swiggy and Zomato, groceries and quick commerce, pharmacies, clothing, electronics.
- Abroad: spends in foreign currency earn 10 per ₹200, but the 3.5% + GST markup costs more than the points are worth. A zero-markup card is still better abroad.
The regular Burgundy debit card already lost EDGE
If you hold the regular Burgundy debit card (not Private), the EDGE Rewards programme ended for you on 1 September 2026, including the double birthday points. Your old points can still be redeemed within Axis’s timelines. That card has the same ₹10,000-in-3-months rule for lounges, and since 1 October, UPI, wallet reloads, credit card bill payments and cash withdrawals don’t count there either. By comparison, Burgundy Private gets off lightly: it keeps its points, just on fewer categories.
What doesn’t change
- Golf: 4 free rounds of green fees a year (one a month at most), 12 free lessons, and 50% off green fees after that.
- Insurance: up to ₹20 lakh personal accident, ₹1 crore air accident, ₹50,000 price and purchase protection, and $500 for lost or delayed bags.
- Limits: ₹4 lakh a day at ATMs and ₹10 lakh a day on purchases.
- NRO accounts: international transactions aren’t enabled, so none of these benefits apply. NRE debit cards get them.
What to do
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Using the debit card mainly for lounges | ⚠️ Spend ₹10,000 on the card (not UPI) in every rolling 3-month window, starting with September to November |
| Paying insurance, taxes, fees or rent with it | ❌ No points from 1 Dec; move these to a credit card that still earns on them, or pay through UPI |
| Taking Uber, Ola or the metro on it | ❌ No points from 1 Dec; use UPI or a credit card |
| Booking flights, hotels and trains on it | ✅ Still 8 points per ₹200 |
| Also holding Magnus for Burgundy | ✅ Put the big spends there; the debit card is now a lounge and BookMyShow card |
See which Axis points transfer where on our Axis transfer partners page, and check any merchant’s code on our MCC Lookup.
DealUni take: this is a trim, not a cut. The ₹10,000 rule is easy to meet if you use the card at all, and the points stay on travel and daily shopping. But the debit card is no longer where your bills, insurance or cab rides should go. Lounge chahiye toh card ghumao, UPI nahi. (Want the lounge? Swipe the card, not UPI.)
