Good news for everyone with a Diwali, Christmas or New Year trip abroad: Visa Power Travel is back for a second round, running from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, and it now covers every overseas country. Pay abroad with an India-issued Visa card and you can earn up to ₹50,000 per card as Air India vouchers or Amazon Pay gift cards.

The first question in our inbox was the obvious one for a points blog: “Can I use this to buy miles cheaply?” Short answer: no. Long answer below, plus how to squeeze the most out of the offer on a real trip.

⚡TL;DR

  • Extended to 31 Jan 2027, now valid in all overseas countries. Register first at visapowertravel.com.
  • Rewards: 0.5% on in-person spends and ATM withdrawals abroad, +10% when you tap with Google Pay or Samsung Pay, and a one-time 10% on your first ₹1 lakh once you’ve made 20 eligible transactions.
  • Cap: ₹50,000 per card, paid as Air India vouchers or Amazon Pay gift cards in ₹1,000 blocks.
  • Online purchases don’t count, so buying Avios, TrueBlue or any other points online earns nothing from this offer.
  • Your card’s own rewards and forex markup still apply on top. Always pay in the local currency; dynamic currency conversion (paying in rupees abroad) is excluded.

₹25,750 ✅

That’s about 17% back on a ₹1.5 lakh trip, before your card’s own points. Keep tapping and you reach the ₹50,000 cap at roughly ₹3.8 lakh of spend on one card. You can register more than one card, and each has its own cap, so a couple travelling with two Visa cards can double it.

iPhone users, read this

The 10% boost is for tapping your phone through Google Pay or Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay isn’t available on Indian cards. On an iPhone you’ll mostly get the 0.5% base plus the ₹10,000 milestone, unless someone in the family has an Android phone with the card set up. A plain card tap or chip-and-PIN earns the base rate only.

🚫Can You Use It to Buy Points or Miles?

We checked, because a 10% rebate on top of a points sale would be a dream. Here’s why it doesn’t work:

1
Buying points is an online purchase

Finnair, JetBlue, Virgin and every other points sale happens on a website. The offer rewards in-person payments abroad, so an online points buy from your sofa in Pune earns nothing from Visa.

2
The 10% boost needs a phone tap at a counter

Tap to Pay means waving your phone at a physical terminal. There’s no checkout button on Finnair’s website that counts as a tap.

3
Tricks to “manufacture” spend are a bad idea

Gift cards, wallet loads or money-transfer counters abroad are exactly what offer terms and bank exclusions are written to catch. At best you get nothing; at worst the rewards get clawed back and the card gets flagged. Not worth it for a few thousand rupees.

💡
What you CAN do

Use the Air India vouchers for a cash-fare Air India ticket and keep your points for a premium award, or stack the offer with a card that earns transferable points abroad. Every rupee of real trip spend then earns Visa’s rebate and miles. That’s the closest this offer gets to “buying points cheaply”. For actual points buys, see our points-sale guide.

🧮Worked Example: A Family Week in Bangkok

A family of four spends ₹2 lakh on hotels paid at the front desk, food, shopping and transport, all tapped with an Android phone on one Visa credit card that has a 2% forex markup:

🧮 One card, one trip
+ ₹1,000→0.5% base on ₹2L
+ ₹20,000→10% Tap to Pay boost on ₹2L
+ ₹10,000→Milestone: 10% on the first ₹1L (after 20 taps)
− ₹4,720→Card forex markup: 2% + 18% GST
≈ ₹26,280→Net gain, before your card’s own reward points

Vouchers come in ₹1,000 blocks, so small leftovers may not convert. Hotel bills you prepay online and flights booked on a website won’t count. Hotels paid in person at check-out usually do, as long as you pay in the local currency.

✅Checklist Before You Fly

  • Register every Visa card you might use at visapowertravel.com before your first spend.
  • Add the card to Google Pay or Samsung Pay on an Android phone and do a small test tap.
  • Check the network logo. Many premium cards come in both Visa and Mastercard versions. Only the Visa one counts here.
  • Always pick the local currency when a terminal asks “INR or THB?”. Paying in rupees (DCC) is excluded and has a worse exchange rate anyway.
  • Spread the spend. The milestone needs 20 eligible transactions, and ATM withdrawals don’t count. Coffee, snacks and 7-Eleven runs all help.
  • Be patient. Transactions can take up to 15 days to show, and rewards are settled weekly.

❓FAQ

Has Visa Power Travel really been extended to January?
Yes. Phase 2 runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 and covers all overseas destinations. Check Visa’s offer page for the final terms.
Can I use it to buy airline miles or hotel points?
No. Points are bought online, and only in-person spends abroad qualify. Buying Avios or TrueBlue points earns nothing from this offer.
Which cards are eligible?
India-issued consumer Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards. Corporate and business cards are excluded.
Do ATM withdrawals count?
They earn the 0.5% base but don’t count toward the 20 transactions for the milestone. Cash withdrawals on a credit card also attract interest and fees, so avoid them.
How are rewards paid?
As Air India vouchers or Amazon Pay e-gift cards in ₹1,000 blocks, up to ₹50,000 per card.
Does my card still earn its normal points?
Yes. Visa’s rebate sits on top of your bank’s rewards, and your bank still charges its forex markup.
📋 DealUni Verdict

Great for real trips, useless for points shopping

If you’re travelling abroad before February, this is one of the most generous card offers India has seen: about 17% back on a ₹1.5 lakh trip if you tap with your phone. Register your Visa cards, pay in local currency and let the vouchers pay for your next Air India ticket. But it can’t make a points sale cheaper, and no amount of creative tapping at the Finnair website will change that.
