Avianca LifeMiles Guide for Indians: Earn, Burn and LifeMiles+
Updated as of 13 Oct 2026. Award prices from our own LifeMiles search on 13 Oct 2026. Programme rules from Avianca’s help centre where available; points marked “reported” come from cardholder and travel-industry reports, not an official LifeMiles page. US$1 = ₹96.71.
Most Indian travellers have never heard of Avianca, the Colombian airline. But its loyalty programme, LifeMiles, is one of the cheapest ways to fly Star Alliance business class out of India, because it doesn’t add fuel surcharges. On the same Lufthansa flight where Miles & More would add a large surcharge, LifeMiles charges just the airport taxes. Here’s how the programme works, how Indians can get the miles, and where it shines.
LifeMiles in one minute
| Airline | Avianca (Colombia), part of Abra Group |
| Alliance | Star Alliance: Air India, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, LOT, Turkish, Thai, ANA, United, Singapore Airlines and more |
| Fuel surcharges | None on partner awards. You pay taxes and a booking fee only |
| Award chart | No published chart; prices vary by route and date |
| Ways in from India | Buy miles (often with a 125–160% bonus), HDFC transfers (2:1, reported), Marriott Bonvoy (3:1), ALL Accor (2:1) |
| Expiry | 12 months without earning activity (reported); 24 months for LifeMiles+ subscribers. Redeeming doesn’t reset the clock |
The sweet spot: Delhi to Europe in business for 34,800 miles
We searched Delhi to Frankfurt in business for 18 November 2026. LifeMiles showed Lufthansa via Munich for 34,800 miles + US$57.86 (about ₹5,600) one way, and LOT via Warsaw at the same mileage with US$48.36 in taxes. No fuel surcharge on either.

For comparison, Lufthansa’s own Miles & More passes on its fuel surcharges, which it raised for the third time this year in October (see our Miles & More surcharge post). LifeMiles+ subscribers get 10% off this price (31,320 miles).
This is a live price from one search, not a chart. Prices change by date and seat availability, so search your own dates before you move or buy a single mile.
How to get LifeMiles from India
| Route | Ratio | Cost per mile (our maths) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy miles in a sale | US$33 per 1,000 + bonus | About ₹1.30–1.45 at a 125–145% bonus, before forex | ✅ Best route for most people, but only in a sale |
| HDFC Infinia, Diners Black, Regalia Gold | 2 points : 1 mile (reported) | ₹2 if you value HDFC points at ₹1 | ⚠️ Worse than buying in a sale; use HDFC points elsewhere |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 3:1 | ₹1.80–2.40 | ❌ Poor |
| ALL Accor | 2:1 | About ₹4 | ❌ Never |
| Flying Star Alliance and crediting to LifeMiles | Varies by fare | – | Fine if you fly Avianca’s partners often |
The surprise: in a good sale, buying LifeMiles is cheaper than transferring HDFC points to them. See our post on the current buy-miles bonus for the full maths and the best card to pay with.
Fees and rules
- Booking fee: about US$25 per partner award ticket (reported; it shows at checkout).
- Changes: allowed within a year of issue; once you’ve flown a segment, only the date or time can change. Change fees are around US$150 (reported).
- Refunds: Avianca lists refund fees of US$30–100 depending on fare type (US$100 for business), for unused tickets issued within the last year. Miles + Money tickets are refunded in miles only.
- Miles + Money: you can pay part of an award in cash.
- Expiry: miles expire after 12 months with no earning activity (reported). Elite members, Avianca co-brand cardholders and LifeMiles+ subscribers get 24 months. Expired miles can be reinstated for a fee.
- One-way awards: LifeMiles prices one-ways, so you can mix programmes for the outbound and return.
LifeMiles+ subscription
LifeMiles+ is a monthly subscription. You pay a fixed US-dollar fee, get a set number of miles every month, and unlock discounts when you redeem.
| Plan | US$ per month | Miles per month | Cost per mile | Free changes and cancellations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | 20 | 500 | 4.0¢ (₹3.87) | ❌ |
| Basic | 50 | 2,000 | 2.5¢ (₹2.42) | ✅ |
| Pro | 100 | 4,500 | 2.22¢ (₹2.15) | ✅ |
| Max | 200 | 10,000 | 2.0¢ (₹1.93) | ✅ |
When you redeem
- 10% fewer miles on Star Alliance, Iberia and GOL awards on every plan, and 10–25% off Avianca’s own flights. It’s applied automatically; taxes and fees don’t change. Our Delhi–Frankfurt business award drops from 34,800 to 31,320 miles, a saving of 3,480 miles, or about ₹4,500 at sale prices.
- No change or cancellation fees on Basic, Pro and Max, but only when you change through LifeMiles’ assisted channels (call centre or chat), not online. Lite doesn’t get this.
- Hotels and car rentals booked through LifeMiles cost 10% fewer miles. You won’t use these from India: they’re poor value compared with flights.
When you buy miles
- No extra bonus. Subscribers buy miles at the same price as everyone else. The page lists no buy-miles bonus or discount.
- The subscription itself is buying miles, and at 2–4 US cents each, it’s expensive. In a 145% sale, miles cost 1.35 cents.
- Longer expiry: the monthly subscription miles keep all your LifeMiles valid for 24 months instead of 12.
- 40% more miles when you book hotels and cars through LifeMiles, and a 100% bonus on the US-only Avianca Amex card. Neither matters for most Indians.
Does it pay off?
Take Lite, the cheapest way to get the 10% discount. Six months cost US$120 (about ₹11,600) for 3,000 miles. Those miles are worth about ₹3,900 at sale prices, so the real cost of the discount is around ₹7,700. Each Delhi–Europe business award saves about ₹4,500, so you break even at two awards.
Basic costs about ₹13,300 more than buying the same miles in a sale over six months. It earns that back only if you redeem three or more business awards, or expect to change or cancel an award ticket.
Our take: skip it for a solo trip. A couple flying business to Europe and back books four awards and saves about 13,900 miles (₹18,000) with Lite. That clears the ₹7,700 cost easily. Check the discounted price shows at checkout before you pay for the award. Then set a reminder to cancel before the 12-month auto-renewal.
The catches
- Search quirks. LifeMiles sometimes shows seats that the partner won’t confirm, and mixed-cabin itineraries can be oddly priced. Check every leg says business before you pay.
- Account security holds. Some members report accounts locked after buying miles, with ID checks needed to unlock. Buy only what you need for a seat you’ve already found.
- Singapore Airlines: partners usually get only economy and some short regional business seats, not long-haul business.
- No published chart. A price you see today can change tomorrow.
DealUni take
LifeMiles is a specialist tool, not a programme to collect in. Its value for Indians is simple: Star Alliance business class out of India without fuel surcharges, especially on Lufthansa group, LOT and Turkish to Europe. Find the seat first, then buy the exact miles you need in a sale, and book the same day.
Pehle seat dhoondo, phir miles khareedo. (Find the seat first, then buy the miles.)
