Marriott Bonvoy is the biggest hotel programme in the world and, with ITC’s luxury hotels and the new Series by Marriott, one of the biggest in India. It started with a root beer stand, swallowed Starwood, and has been quietly devaluing ever since. It’s also the most misunderstood: some people get ₹2 a point at the Maldives, others get 40 paise at a business hotel in Chennai. Here’s how it works, and how to land on the right side of that gap.
TL;DR
- 🏨 10,000+ hotels (since Jun 2026), 30+ brands, and about 230 in India, including ITC’s Luxury Collection hotels.
- 💰 A point is worth about ₹0.60–0.80 on average, but ₹2+ at Maldives luxury resorts and ₹1+ at JW Marriott Mumbai on busy dates.
- 🎁 Book 5 award nights, pay for 4. Every member gets the 5th night free on standard-room awards.
- 💳 Best way to earn from India: Amex Membership Rewards at 1:1 if you already hold an Amex (new applications are paused), HSBC at 1:1, plus Club ITC (+50%). Link Swiggy and Flipkart for small free extras. Axis no longer transfers to Marriott, and HDFC is 2:1.
- ⭐ Platinum (50 nights) is the status worth having in India: breakfast, lounge and 4pm checkout at Westin, JW, Sheraton and Marriott hotels.
From a root beer stand to Bonvoy
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1927 | J. Willard and Alice Marriott open a root beer stand in Washington, DC. It grows into the Hot Shoppes restaurant chain. |
| 1957 | The first hotel opens: the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. |
| 1995–98 | Marriott buys Ritz-Carlton, then Renaissance. |
| 2016 | Marriott buys Starwood (Westin, Sheraton, St. Regis, W, Le Méridien) for about US$13 billion and becomes the world’s largest hotel company. |
| 2018 | Marriott Rewards, Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) merge. Each SPG Starpoint becomes 3 Marriott points. |
| 2019 | The combined programme is renamed Marriott Bonvoy. |
SPG was the cult favourite. Its points were worth about three Marriott points each, and its famous airline transfer (20,000 Starpoints for 25,000 miles) lives on today as Marriott’s “60,000 points for 25,000 miles” rule. Loyalists feared the merger would water things down. They were right.
How Bonvoy points lost value
| When | Change | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | One award chart: Category 1–7, from 7,500 to 60,000 points a night | Top hotels were affordable |
| 2019 | Category 8 added (85,000 standard, up to 100,000 peak); off-peak and peak pricing | Luxury hotels cost more on busy dates |
| March 2022 | The award chart is scrapped for dynamic pricing; limits removed from 2023 | Some hotels doubled overnight (e.g. 50,000 to 100,000 points) |
| 2025–26 | Luxury spikes, then a further 5–10% rise in July 2026 with no notice | Peak luxury nights now 120,000–170,000+ points |
The Points Guy valued Marriott points at 0.9 US cents in 2018 (about ₹0.87 at today’s rate) and 0.75 cents in October 2026 (₹0.72): a fall of about 17%, while top-end prices roughly doubled. Free night certificates lost the most, which is why Marriott now lets you top them up.
The lesson: hotel points lose value over time. Earn with a plan, redeem within a year or two, and don’t hoard.

How you earn Bonvoy points from India
On stays: 10 points per US$ at most hotels, plus an elite bonus (Silver +10%, Gold +25%, Platinum +50%, Titanium +75%). A ₹15,000 night at a Westin (about US$156) earns about 1,560 points as a basic member, or 2,340 as Platinum.
From credit cards:
| Card | Rate into Bonvoy | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Amex India (Platinum Travel, Gold Charge, Platinum Charge, MRCC) | 1 MR = 1 Bonvoy point | ✅ The best route, but only for existing cardholders: Amex India has paused new applications |
| HSBC TravelOne / Premier | 1:1 | ✅ Good; watch for HSBC transfer bonuses |
| HSBC Platinum | 2:1 | ⚠️ Only for a small top-up |
| HDFC Marriott Bonvoy (co-brand) | 8 points per ₹150 at Marriott, 4 on travel and dining, 2 elsewhere | ✅ For the free nights, not the earn rate |
| HDFC Infinia / Diners Club Black | 2 RP = 1 Bonvoy point | ❌ Poor; use SmartBuy or airlines instead |
| HDFC Regalia Gold | 3:1 | ❌ Poor |
| Kotak Air Miles cards (Solitaire, Air+) | 3:1 | ❌ Poor |
| Axis EDGE cards | No longer a partner since 2 Apr 2026 | ❌ |
| SBI, ICICI, IDFC, Yes, AU | No Marriott transfer | ❌ |
From everyday apps (link your accounts first; nothing is credited retroactively):
| Partner | How you earn | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Swiggy (food, Instamart, Dineout) | 5 points per ₹500 spent, minimum ₹500 an order, maximum 1,000 points an order | 🟡 About 0.7% back, on top of your card’s rewards. Free, so link it. |
| Flipkart | 100 points per ₹1,000 order, up to 500 points for orders of ₹6,000+; capped at 500 points a year (1,000 for Flipkart VIP) | 🟡 Generous rate, tiny cap: worth ₹350–700 a year at most |
| Flipkart SuperCoins | 2 SuperCoins = 1 Bonvoy point, and 2 Bonvoy points = 1 SuperCoin | ❌ Both directions lose value; use only to rescue expiring coins or points |
| Club ITC | 2 Green Points = 3 Bonvoy points, max 5,000 Green Points a quarter (20,000 a year = 30,000 Bonvoy points); takes 8–10 weeks, one way only | ✅ The best conversion into Bonvoy |
Bonus for elites: Marriott Silver and Gold members get 3 months of Swiggy One free, and Platinum and above get 12 months. Swiggy and Flipkart are open only to members living in India.
The HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card (₹3,000 + GST) is worth it for the Free Night Award each year (up to 15,000 points, now topped up to 40,000 with your own points), the extra free nights at ₹6, 9 and 15 lakh of spend, Silver status and 10 elite night credits. Its everyday earn rate (about 0.9% on general spends) is weak, so use another card for daily spending.
What a point is worth: real examples
Marriott has no award chart. Prices move with demand, so the same hotel can cost 40,000 points one night and 70,000 the next. That’s why the value per point swings so much:
| Hotel (one night, 17 Nov 2026) | Points | Cash price | ₹ per point |
|---|---|---|---|
| St. Regis Maldives Vommuli | 170,000 | ₹4,00,338 | 🟢 ₹2.35 |
| JW Marriott Maldives | 97,000 | ₹2,02,804 | 🟢 ₹2.09 |
| JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar | 42,000 | ₹53,808 | 🟢 ₹1.28 |
| Westin Chennai Velachery | 23,000 | ₹22,420 | 🟢 ₹0.97 |
| St. Regis Mumbai | 60,000 | ₹53,808 | 🟡 ₹0.90 |
| St. Regis Bangkok | 64,000 | ₹44,969 | 🟡 ₹0.70 |
| Fairfield Chennai OMR | 10,000 | ₹5,287 | 🔴 ₹0.53 |
| St. Regis Dubai The Palm | 75,000 | ₹38,008 | 🔴 ₹0.51 |
| Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort | 38,000 | ₹15,930 | 🔴 ₹0.42 |
Cash prices include taxes. Maldives awards don’t cover seaplane transfers or meals. We value Bonvoy points at ₹0.60–0.80 on average: redeem above that, pay cash below it.
The rule: use points when the cash price is high and the points price isn’t.
How to stay free: four tricks that work
- The 5th night free. Book 5 consecutive award nights in one reservation and the cheapest night is free, for every member. At JW Maldives, 5 nights cost about 3.9 lakh points instead of 4.85 lakh, for a stay that would cost about ₹10 lakh in cash: that’s ₹2.60 a point. It works on standard rooms only, not on Cash + Points or free night certificates.
- Top up free night certificates. Since March 2026 you can add up to 25,000 of your own points to any Free Night Award. A 35,000 certificate now books a 60,000-point hotel, and the HDFC card’s 15,000 certificate books up to 40,000 (Westin Chennai at 23,000 or JW Mumbai Sahar at 42,000 on some dates).
- Pool family points for free. Any member can send up to 100,000 points a year to another member at no cost, so a family can combine balances for one big redemption.
- Buy points only for a specific stay. Marriott sells points with a 40–55% bonus four or five times a year. The current sale runs until 24 Nov 2026 (Singapore time): the bonus is targeted at 20–55%, the limit is doubled to 200,000 points, and 55% works out to about ₹0.78 a point. That only beats cash for a high-value booking like the Maldives, and only for the shortfall.
Elite status: what you get and how to get it fast
| Tier | Nights a year | Key benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 10 | 10% bonus points, priority late checkout |
| Gold | 25 | 25% bonus, 2pm late checkout, room upgrades (not suites) |
| Platinum | 50 | 50% bonus, 4pm checkout (not at resorts or convention hotels), lounge access, upgrades including some suites, breakfast as a welcome gift, plus an annual Choice Benefit (see below) |
| Titanium | 75 | 75% bonus, a second Choice Benefit, which can be a free night certificate up to 40,000 points |
| Ambassador | 100 + US$23,000 (about ₹22 lakh) spend | A personal ambassador and 24-hour check-in |
Platinum breakfast is reliable at Westin, Sheraton, Le Méridien, JW and Marriott Hotels. In Asia-Pacific, Fairfield and Element also give it; Moxy and AC give a small food credit; Ritz-Carlton and EDITION give none.
Why Platinum matters in India: breakfast at a 5-star hotel costs ₹2,000–4,000 per person. Two people on a 3-night stay save ₹12,000–24,000, plus lounge drinks and a 4pm checkout.
Your rewards at 50 and 75 nights
| Milestone | Choose one |
|---|---|
| 50 nights(Platinum) | 5 Nightly Upgrade Awards, 5 elite night credits, gift Silver status to someone, a US$100 charity donation, or a mattress discount |
| 75 nights(Titanium) | Any 50-night option, gift Gold status, or a Free Night Award up to 40,000 points (top it up with 25,000 of your own points to book a 65,000-point hotel) |
Choose by 1 February the following year (1 Feb 2027 for nights stayed in 2026), or Marriott gives you the upgrade awards by default.
Nightly Upgrade Awards replaced Suite Night Awards in 2024. Attach them to a paid or points stay booked direct; the hotel confirms a premium room or suite 3 days before arrival (it used to be 5) and keeps trying until 2pm the day before. You need one award per night for the whole stay, and they expire on 31 December of the following year. For a 3-night stay at a JW or Ritz-Carlton, 5 upgrade awards can turn a ₹25,000 room into a ₹60,000 suite, so for most Indian families they beat the 5 elite night credits.
Lifetime status: 250 nights over 5 years of status gives lifetime Silver, 400 nights and 7 years gives Gold, and 600 nights and 10 years gives Platinum. Unused nights don’t roll over to the next year.
Shortcuts to status:
- Status challenge: Marriott doesn’t publish it, but you can ask by phone. Platinum needs about 16 paid nights in 90 days, and Gold about 8. Award nights don’t count, and it’s once every 3 years. Worth it only if you’re travelling anyway.
- Credit cards: Amex Platinum Charge gives Gold, but Amex India has paused new card applications, so this only helps existing cardholders. The HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card gives Silver plus 10 elite night credits, so you need 40 more nights for Platinum.
Transferring to airlines: when it’s worth it
Marriott converts to 37 airlines, mostly at 3:1, with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points (10,000 for United; no bonus for American, Delta or LifeMiles). Aeroplan adds 15% more until 31 Oct 2026. Partners include Singapore KrisFlyer, Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, Turkish, Aeroplan and Flying Blue, but not Air India.
At ₹0.70 a point, 60,000 points (₹42,000 of hotel value) become 25,000 miles, so each mile costs about ₹1.68. That only pays off for business-class awards, or to top up a seat you’ve already found. We cover this in detail in Hotel Points to Airline Miles: When Converting Pays Off.
What to do
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Planning a Maldives trip | ✅ Save Bonvoy points and book 5 nights to get one free. It’s the best value in the programme. |
| Staying at Indian business hotels on weekdays | 🟡 Compare cash and points every time; points often beat cash at JW and Westin, rarely at Fairfield or resort hotels |
| Holding an Amex card | ✅ Transfer MR to Marriott 1:1 only when you’ve found the award |
| Doing 30+ hotel nights a year | ✅ Concentrate them at Marriott and push for Platinum |

FAQ
Do Bonvoy points expire? Yes, after 24 months with no earning or redeeming. Receiving points from someone else doesn’t count as activity.
Can I book ITC hotels with Bonvoy points? Yes, ITC’s Luxury Collection hotels (Grand Chola, Maratha, Grand Central and others) are bookable on Marriott. Check both Marriott and Club ITC prices before booking.
DealUni take
Bonvoy rewards picky people. Earn through Amex (if you already have it), HSBC, ITC and the HDFC card’s free nights, redeem on high-cash dates and resorts, book 5 nights when you can, and chase Platinum only if you already travel a lot. Do that and ₹1–2 a point is realistic.
Points wahi kaam aate hain jo sahi raat pe kharch hon. (Points only work when they’re spent on the right night.)
