Free Roaming Data Abroad: Which Indian Cards Give eSIMs

Updated as of 22 Oct 2026. Visa details from Visa’s offer terms on its Razorpay rewards portal, checked 22 Oct 2026. US$1 = ₹94.97 (20 Oct 2026).

You land in Bangkok or Paris and your first job is buying a SIM or switching on a costly roaming pack. Many Indian cardholders don’t need to: your Visa or Mastercard may already give you free data abroad. Here’s who gets what, and how to claim it before you fly.

TL;DR

  • Visa credit or debit card: a free travel SIM or eSIM, up to 6GB for 30 days, if you’ve spent US$600 (about ₹57,000) in foreign currency on the card in the last 12 months. Claim by 31 Dec 2026.
  • Visa forex card: the same SIM, no spend needed. Until 31 Mar 2027.
  • Mastercard: smaller freebies through Airalo and Flexiroam. Check your card in their apps.
  • Claim before you leave. The Visa SIM needs online KYC first.

You may already qualify. If you paid for last summer’s hotel abroad, or a few dollar subscriptions, on a Visa card, check your statements. Rupee-billed spends don’t count, even on foreign websites.

Visa forex prepaid cards: no spend needed

Carry a Visa forex card from your bank? You get the same SIM without the US$600 spend, once per card, until 31 Mar 2027. Pick 6GB of data, or 4GB plus 60 minutes of calls in most regions. Claim it on Visa’s forex portal (visaforex.poshvine.com). A physical SIM costs ₹100 to deliver; the eSIM is free.

How to claim the Visa SIM

  1. Go to the portal, click Claim and verify your card.
  2. Pick a region and plan on the SIM partner’s site.
  3. Finish KYC through the emailed link. You get three tries, then a 7-day wait.
  4. Choose eSIM (QR code by email) or physical SIM.
  5. Activate when you land. Validity starts on activation, not on claim.

Do this at least a week before you fly. KYC hiccups at the airport are exactly what you’re trying to avoid.

Mastercard: smaller freebies

AppWhat Mastercard holders getHow to check
AiraloA small free “Discover” eSIM: about 300MB on World and World Elite cards and 200MB on Platinum and Titanium, for 3 daysAdd your Mastercard under Saved Cards in the Airalo app
FlexiroamFree roaming data for eligible cards, up to 3GB for 15 days on some World Elite cards, plus 20% off later plansTap the Mastercard banner in the Flexiroam app and enter your card
Mastercard sets eligibility card by card, and its Priceless offers site was down for maintenance when we checked. The apps will tell you what your card gets before you pay anything.

Be realistic: 200–300MB covers maps and a cab ride from the airport, not a holiday. Flexiroam is the better one if your card qualifies.

Which one should you use?

You are…What to do
Flying abroad before 31 Dec with a Visa card that’s crossed US$600 abroad✅ Claim the Visa SIM now. It covers most short trips
Carrying a Visa forex card✅ Claim it on the forex portal; no spend needed
A Visa holder below US$600⚠️ Don’t spend extra abroad just for this. The forex markup on that spend can cost more than a paid eSIM
Mastercard only⚠️ Check Flexiroam first, Airalo as a backup
Travelling for 2+ weeks with heavy data use❌ Free plans won’t last. Buy a local SIM or a bigger eSIM

Want to cut the forex markup on that US$600 too? See which cards charge least abroad in our Trip Spend Planner.

DealUni take: the Visa SIM is the real prize. If you’ve spent abroad this year, 6GB is waiting for you. Claim it a week before you fly. Card mein data free hai, bas claim karna yaad rakho. (The data is free with your card; just remember to claim it.)
