Japan via Kuala Lumpur: 10 Indian Cities, Double JAL Miles
Updated as of 8 Oct 2026. JAL’s double-miles offer on the new Kuala Lumpur–Fukuoka flight: register by 1 Nov 2026, fly by 31 Mar 2027.
For Indian travellers without a convenient nonstop to Japan, Kuala Lumpur is one option worth pricing. Malaysia Airlines lists 10 Indian gateways and offers onward flights to Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai and Fukuoka. On the Fukuoka route, eligible JAL-coded paid tickets can earn double JAL miles. The aircraft and crew are Malaysia Airlines, not JAL.
TL;DR
- ✈️ Malaysia Airlines flies to Kuala Lumpur from Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.
- 🇯🇵 From KL it flies to Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai and Fukuoka. One-stop itineraries may be available; check connections on your dates.
- 🎁 Double JAL miles on KL–Fukuoka, open to JAL Mileage Bank members anywhere, India included. JAL’s Y-class example earns 5,636 total miles each way instead of 2,818 normally; a return adds 5,636 bonus miles.
- ⚠️ The catch: only eligible paid tickets with the JAL flight number (JL7098/JL7099) count. The same flight booked as MH56/MH57 earns no bonus.
- 💸 The bonus scales with your fare. Cheap economy fares earn much less, so don’t overpay to chase it.
Malaysia Airlines from India to Japan
| Leg | Where |
|---|---|
| India → Kuala Lumpur | Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram |
| Kuala Lumpur → Japan | Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai, Fukuoka (26 weekly flights in the September launch announcement; schedules may change) |
| Beyond Fukuoka | Codeshare connections to JAL-operated domestic services, including Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Matsuyama and Sapporo; check which flights can be issued on one ticket |
Why Fukuoka? It is a useful starting point for Kyushu. The airport subway takes around 5 minutes to Hakata and 11 minutes to Tenjin, from the domestic-terminal station. International arrivals need to allow for immigration, baggage and the roughly 10-minute terminal shuttle first. See Fukuoka Airport access and the city transport guide. Pick your arrival airport around the places you actually want to visit.
The KL–Fukuoka flight
| Flight | Route | Departs | Arrives | Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MH56 / JL7098 | Kuala Lumpur → Fukuoka | 23:45 | 07:05 (+1) | Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun |
| MH57 / JL7099 | Fukuoka → Kuala Lumpur | 10:00 | 15:45 | Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun |
The KL–Fukuoka flight leaves at 23:45 and arrives at 07:05 the next day. That can suit some India connections, but neither direction guarantees a short layover. Compare the complete itinerary, not just the long-haul sector: check operating days, the airline’s minimum connection time, baggage handling and any overnight stop.
The scheduled 737-8 is a narrowbody. Malaysia Airlines describes its business seat as a recliner with an 8-inch recline, not a flat bed. Compare the comfort and fare premium accordingly; aircraft can change. Official 737-8 cabin details.
JAL double miles: the rules
| Who | JAL Mileage Bank members in any country, including India; registration and an eligible paid fare are required |
| Register | 7 Aug–1 Nov 2026, on JAL’s campaign page. Only flights after you register count |
| Fly | 2 Sep 2026–31 Mar 2027 |
| Flights | Kuala Lumpur–Fukuoka, JL7098 / JL7099 flight numbers only. MH56/MH57 tickets don’t count |
| Fare classes | Eligible individual-fare booking classes: J, C, D, I, Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N, Q. X, O, Z and G do not qualify. Award tickets do not earn this flight-mile bonus |
| Bonus | The same miles again, credited with your flight miles |
| Example | Full-fare economy (Y): 2,818 miles each way becomes 5,636, so 11,272 for a return trip |
What the miles are worth
| Fare | JAL miles, return KL–Fukuoka | ≈ ₹ value |
|---|---|---|
| Full-fare economy (Y), normally | 5,636 | ₹6,341 |
| Full-fare economy (Y), with double miles | 11,272 | ₹12,681 |
| Discounted economy | A lower percentage of 2,818 each way, then doubled | Check your fare class |
Compare the extra cost with the extra bonus, not with all the miles earned. In the Y-class return example, the campaign adds an estimated ₹6,341 of value. If getting the JL code costs ₹8,000 more, the difference is about ₹1,660 against you before any hotel, baggage or connection costs. This is hypothetical fare math, not a live price quote. Check equivalent dates, fare conditions and baggage before choosing an airline.
How to get the JL flight number
- Join JAL Mileage Bank (free) and register for the campaign before you fly.
- Search on jal.co.jp for Kuala Lumpur–Fukuoka. The result should show JL7098/JL7099. If it shows only MH56/MH57, that ticket won’t qualify.
- Ask for a through-ticket option first, with JL7098/JL7099 on the eligible sector. The marketing flight number matters, not simply the website selling it. If separate India–KL tickets are necessary, compare the added cost and missed-connection risk; confirm baggage transfer and any Malaysian entry requirements if collecting bags or staying overnight.
- Add your JAL number to both bookings. Eligible paid India–KL legs can earn normal JAL partner miles, subject to the MH booking class; this campaign does not double those legs. Do not credit the same flight to another frequent-flyer programme.
An itinerary showing MH56/MH57 on the Fukuoka sector does not qualify for the campaign, regardless of where you buy it. A single ticket can still be the better purchase if it offers a lower total fare and simpler connections. Check the JL marketing code and booking class on the issued ticket rather than assuming every JAL-site or travel-agent booking qualifies. JAL lists the normal Malaysia Airlines accrual rules separately.
Going on points instead
Malaysia Airlines flights can also be booked as JAL partner awards, subject to eligible MH-operated flights and award availability. That is a different route from this paid-ticket promotion: an award booking does not earn the double-miles bonus. Check the programme’s actual quote, taxes, carrier charges and cancellation rules before transferring bank points. Our Rewards Toolkit can help compare transfer options, but it does not establish live award availability.
No Chennai–KL–Fukuoka award price or live seat availability is asserted here. Confirm the complete itinerary with the programme you intend to use; a distance-chart estimate is not a bookable quote.
What to do
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Flying to Japan from Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata or another Indian gateway | ✅ Price Malaysia Airlines via KL alongside Thai, Cathay and Singapore Airlines |
| Want to start in Kyushu or southern Japan | ✅ Check the JL7098/JL7099 marketing code, eligible fare and registration before booking |
| Collecting JAL miles anyway | ✅ Register by 1 Nov 2026, then fly the qualifying sector by 31 Mar 2027 |
| On a cheap economy fare and don’t care about JAL miles | ❌ Book one simple Malaysia Airlines ticket and skip the campaign |
Verdict
Kuala Lumpur offers another one-stop route from Malaysia Airlines’ 10 Indian gateways to Japan. Fukuoka makes sense if your trip starts in Kyushu; it is not automatically better or cheaper than Tokyo. The double miles are an extra for eligible JL-coded paid tickets, not a reason to buy a pricier or riskier itinerary. JAL miles normally expire at the end of the 36th month after the flight month, so have a realistic redemption plan. See JAL mileage validity.
