Mastercard Pays Up to ₹4,000 When You Cancel a Flight. Visa?
Updated as of 18 Oct 2026. Benefit terms are from the DreamFolks CFAR terms and conditions and the Mastercard DreamFolks claims portal, checked 18 Oct 2026. Mastercard hasn’t published a card list on its own site yet; the cards below are the ones reported as eligible, so check yours on the portal before relying on it.
Mastercard has quietly added a “Cancellation for Any Reason” benefit for some premium cards in India. If you cancel a domestic flight you paid for with an eligible Mastercard, it pays back what you lost, up to ₹4,000 per booking (PNR), twice during the offer period. No reason needed: change of plans is enough.
The benefit at a glance
| What you get | Your net cancellation loss, up to ₹4,000 per PNR (not per passenger) |
| How many times | 2 claims during the offer period, one per PNR |
| Flights | Domestic flights within India only |
| Travel period | Reported as 1 Oct 2026 to 31 Dec 2027 |
| Payment | The full fare must be paid on the eligible Mastercard |
| Cancel by | At least 24 hours before departure. No-shows don’t count |
| Claim within | 30 days of cancelling, on the Mastercard DreamFolks portal |
| Payout | Within 15 business days of a verified claim |

The big catch: only partly refundable fares
The terms cover only partially refundable bookings. That’s most normal domestic economy fares in India: you cancel, the airline keeps a cancellation fee and refunds the rest. Two kinds of fare are out:
- Non-refundable fares, where the airline refunds nothing except some taxes.
- Fully refundable fares, where you lose nothing anyway.
What’s paid back is the “net cancellation loss”: what you paid, minus the refund you got. Convenience, platform and insurance fees don’t count, so a travel site’s booking fee stays lost. Charter flights are excluded, and so are cancellations caused by big disruptions such as war, pandemics or government restrictions. This is for your own change of plans.
What it’s worth
| Example booking | Fare paid | Airline refund | Your loss | Mastercard pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 passenger, cancel 5 days out | ₹7,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹3,000 | ₹3,000 |
| 2 passengers, one PNR | ₹14,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹6,000 | ₹4,000 (cap) |
| Non-refundable fare | ₹5,000 | ₹0 | ₹5,000 | ₹0, not covered |
Illustrative figures; airline cancellation fees vary by airline, fare type and how close to departure you cancel.
Used twice, that’s up to ₹8,000 back. Since the cap is per PNR, a family booked together gets ₹4,000 in total, not ₹4,000 each.
Which cards are reported as eligible
- Credit cards: HDFC Infinia, Axis Magnus, Magnus for Burgundy and Olympus, ICICI Emeralde Private Metal, SBI Card Aurum, HSBC Premier and Privé, Standard Chartered Ultimate, IDFC FIRST Mayura, RBL Nova, Lumière and World Safari, IndusInd Crest, Solitaire and Pioneer Heritage, and IDBI Opulence.
- Debit cards: some World Elite debit cards, including YES Bank Private, SBM Private and Bandhan Bank.
It’s a Mastercard benefit, so only the Mastercard version of each card counts. Several of these cards are also issued on Visa, Diners Club or other networks; check the logo on your card. The portal asks you to verify your card before you can claim, which is the quickest way to confirm.
Is there a Visa version?
No. We couldn’t find any Visa India benefit that refunds a flight you cancel by choice. Visa’s trip cancellation cover exists in other countries, such as the US, but it pays only for specific reasons like illness. In India, Visa’s current card perks are cashback and hotel offers, not cancellation cover. So if your card is the Visa version of Infinia, Magnus or Aurum, this Mastercard benefit doesn’t apply.
Some banks offer their own cancellation cover, though, which works whatever network your card is on, and often pays more:
| Card | Cover | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| IDFC FIRST Mayura | Up to ₹25,000 for flights + ₹25,000 for hotels | Any reason, domestic and international, 2 claims per policy year |
| IDFC FIRST Ashva | Up to ₹25,000, flights and hotels combined | Any reason, domestic and international, 2 claims per policy year |
| IndiGo IDFC FIRST | Up to ₹25,000 | 2 claims a year |
| IDFC FIRST Wealth, Select, WOW! Black | Up to ₹10,000 | Reimbursement on set criteria |
| ICICI Emeralde Private Metal | Up to ₹12,000 | Cancellation charges on domestic flight and hotel bookings |

The IDFC FIRST covers pay only the non-refundable part of the booking, need you to cancel at least 24 hours ahead, and want the claim raised within 30 days. If you hold Mayura or Emeralde Private Metal on Mastercard, you may be able to use the bank’s cover and Mastercard’s on different bookings; you can’t claim the same loss twice.
How to claim
- Pay the whole fare on your eligible Mastercard.
- If plans change, cancel at least 24 hours before departure and keep the cancellation invoice.
- Within 30 days, log in to the Mastercard DreamFolks portal, verify your card and pick the Cancellation for Any Reason benefit.
- Upload the e-ticket, the cancellation invoice and your card statement showing the payment.
| You are… | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Booking regular domestic fares on an eligible Mastercard, with plans that might change | ✅ Use it. Up to ₹4,000 back, twice |
| Holding the Visa or Diners version of one of these cards | ❌ Not covered. Check if your bank has its own cancellation cover |
| Buying the cheapest non-refundable fares | ❌ Not covered; this needs a partly refundable fare |
| Usually putting flights on another card for rewards | ⚠️ Weigh the rewards you’d give up against a cancellation you may never make |
DealUni take: a genuinely useful free perk, and rare in India: most card travel cover only pays out for illness or disasters. There’s no Visa equivalent, and IDFC FIRST’s own covers are bigger. It won’t change which card you carry, but if you hold an eligible Mastercard, pay for domestic flights with it and remember the portal when plans change. The card list isn’t official yet, so verify your card on the portal first.
Plan badla? ₹4,000 tak wapas. (Plans changed? Up to ₹4,000 back.)
