United MileagePlus 2027: Status Rules, Earning Cuts, India Impact
Updated as of 14 Oct 2026. Based on United’s 19 February 2026 announcement and its 13 October 2026 Premier update. US$1 = ₹96.71.
United has made two rounds of changes to MileagePlus this year. In April it cut the miles most members earn and gave US cardholders cheaper awards. On 13 October it rewrote the Premier status rules for 2027. If you collect United miles from India, the short version: earning got worse, status got harder, and the best perks need a card you can’t get here.
Change 1: fewer miles from flying (since 2 April 2026)
For tickets bought from 2 April 2026, United pays fewer miles to members without a United credit card, and more to those with one.
| Member level | Before (miles per US$) | Now, no United card | Now, with United card |
|---|---|---|---|
| General member | 5 | 3 | 6 |
| Premier Silver | 7 | 5 | 8 |
| Premier Gold | 8 | 6 | 9 |
| Premier Platinum | 9 | 7 | 10 |
| Premier 1K | 11 | 9 | 12 |
What it means for you: on a ₹1,00,000 United ticket (about US$1,034 of fare), a general member now earns about 3,100 miles instead of 5,170. That’s ₹2,300 less value at our ₹1.10 a mile.
Change 2: cheaper awards, but only for cardholders
- At least 10% off every United-operated award for primary holders of a United co-brand card, and 15% off if they also have Premier status. United’s example: a 15,000-mile economy award costs 13,500.
- Extra Polaris business saver seats that only cardholders can see, from 72,000 miles (68,000 with status).
- Partner awards aren’t discounted. And partner business prices are lower for Premier members than for everyone else.
United’s cards are issued in the US and a few other markets, not India. So an Indian member pays more for the same award seat than a US cardholder sitting next to them.
Change 3: new Premier status rules for 2027
From 1 January 2027, United drops Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF). Status will depend only on Premier Qualifying Points (PQP), which you earn at 1 PQP per US$1 spent on United-ticketed flights. You still need at least 4 flights on United or United Express.
| Status | 2026: flights + PQP | 2026: PQP only | 2027: PQP only | 2027 spend in ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 15 + 5,000 | 6,000 | 6,000 | about ₹5.8 lakh |
| Premier Gold (Star Alliance Gold) | 30 + 10,000 | 12,000 | 12,000 | about ₹11.6 lakh |
| Premier Platinum | 45 + 15,000 | 18,000 | 18,000 | about ₹17.4 lakh |
| Premier 1K | 60 + 22,000 | 28,000 | 32,000 | about ₹30.9 lakh |
- Frequent cheap flights no longer help. The flights-plus-points route let people qualify with many short trips. That’s gone.
- 1K got harder: 32,000 PQP instead of 28,000, or 10,000 more than the old flights-plus-points route.
- US cardholders get help: card spending earns PQP, and cardholders get a starter deposit of 5% of their tier’s target. Indian members get neither.
- Upgrades go dynamic: from 1 February 2027, the number of PlusPoints an upgrade costs will vary with demand, instead of a fixed price.
- Benefits unchanged: lounge access, Star Alliance Gold and upgrade priority weren’t changed in this update.
What this means if you fly from India
- Air India and other partner flights earn PQP as a share of the miles you earn, with a cap per flight, unless they’re booked on a United ticket. Booking Air India flights through united.com earns the full 1 PQP per US$1.
- Premier Gold means about ₹11.6 lakh a year on United-ticketed flights. That’s a lot for Star Alliance Gold, so compare other Star Alliance programmes before you chase it.
- Your United miles are safe. Nothing in these changes touches miles you already have, and they still don’t expire.
- Transfers still work. Axis, HDFC, HSBC, SBI and Kotak transfers aren’t affected. Just transfer when you’ve found the seat, not before.

DealUni take
United is building its programme around its US credit cards, and Indian members are on the wrong side of that line. Don’t chase United status from India unless your company buys you a lot of United tickets. Keep United miles for free-to-cancel bookings and US domestic hops, and look elsewhere for business class from India.
