United MileagePlus Guide for Indians: Transfers, Awards, Catches

Updated as of 14 Oct 2026. Programme rules from United’s announcements and published terms. Transfer ratios from bank terms where available; ratios marked “reported” come from cardholder reports. Award prices are from our own united.com searches on 14 Oct 2026, not a published chart. US$1 = ₹96.71.

United MileagePlus is one of the easiest airline programmes for Indians to earn: Axis, HDFC, HSBC, SBI and Kotak cards all transfer to it. United is in Star Alliance, so its miles also book Air India, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish and more. But easy to earn doesn’t mean good value from India. Here’s how it works, where it shines, and where you’ll overpay.

SBI and Kotak ratios from their published terms; Axis ratios from the Travel EDGE partner list; HDFC and HSBC ratios from cardholder reports. Axis transfers count towards your yearly transfer cap. Check your bank’s portal before you move points: transfers can’t be reversed.

Best routes: Axis Atlas and Magnus for Burgundy, at 4–5 United miles per ₹100. HDFC and HSBC points are worth more elsewhere (SmartBuy for HDFC, KrisFlyer at 1:1 for HSBC). And never transfer “to have miles ready”: United miles don’t expire, but your bank points may get better partners later.

What this tells you:

  • Partner business to Europe is expensive. The same kind of Delhi–Europe business seat cost 34,800 LifeMiles on Lufthansa when we searched in October (see our LifeMiles guide). At 1,10,000 miles, United is more than three times the price.
  • Short business hops cost a lot too. Chennai–Singapore business on Singapore Airlines is 65,000 United miles, against 47,500 KrisFlyer miles at saver level.
  • United’s own long-haul flights are priced like cash. Polaris business from Delhi to San Francisco came to 5,00,000 miles, worth about ₹5.5 lakh at our value. Never book that with miles.
  • Economy to the US is the one fair price: 49,500 miles on Air India and Air Canada, if you don’t mind two stops.

Where United still makes sense

  • Flights within the US, on United and, through its tie-up, JetBlue. Short domestic awards can be cheap. See our JetBlue and United post.
  • Uncertain plans. Free changes and cancellations before departure make United a good “hold a seat” option.
  • Family pooling. Up to five members can pool miles in one account, and since June 2026 pooled miles also work on partner airlines.
  • When Air India releases seats to United. It happens rarely, but when it does, United shows the seats and books them online.

The catches for Indian members

  • The best prices are for US cardholders. Since April 2026, United co-brand cardholders get at least 10% off United-operated awards (15% with Premier status) and extra saver seats in Polaris business. Those cards aren’t available in India.
  • Partner prices depend on status. United shows lower partner business prices to Premier members; regular members pay more, such as 88,000 instead of 80,000 miles for partner business from the US to Europe.
  • No published partner chart. United has changed partner prices without notice, including sharp rises on some business routes in 2024.
  • Mixed-cabin trick. A “business” result may include economy legs at the business price. Check every segment.
  • Late bookings cost more. Awards booked within about 30 days of departure can cost extra miles.
  • The Excursionist Perk is gone. The free extra one-way on round trips ended in August 2025. Older guides still describe it.
  • Asiana leaves MileagePlus on 17 Dec 2026.

Status changes for 2027 are covered in our post on United’s 2027 status rules and earning cuts.

DealUni take

United is a good programme for Americans and a mediocre one for Indians. Use it for US domestic flights, flexible bookings and the rare Air India seat it shows. For business class out of India, transfer your Axis points to Aeroplan, KrisFlyer or a cheaper Star Alliance programme instead. United’s free cancellations are its best feature from here.

Miles kamaana aasaan hai, sahi jagah kharch karna asli kaam. (Earning the miles is easy; spending them well is the real work.)
