Quick Hits: Japan Tax Refunds, Hyatt Dining Nights, Qatar–WestJet
Updated as of 28 Oct 2026. From Japan’s Tourism Agency and Customs, Qatar Airways’ 26 Oct press release, Turkish Airlines’ campaign terms and World of Hyatt’s offer terms, checked 28 Oct 2026. US$1 = ₹94.43.
Japan: tax-free shopping becomes a refund from 1 Nov
- What changes: from 1 November 2026, shops charge Japan’s consumption tax at the till. You get it back after a customs check when you leave Japan.
- Minimum: ¥5,000 or more (before tax) per shop per day. Gold and platinum bullion don’t qualify.
- At the airport: before security, scan your passport at a tax-free kiosk, or use Visit Japan Web at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha. Green means done; red means customs wants to see the goods. Do it within 90 days of buying.
- The trap: don’t check in a bag with your purchases before the kiosk; you need all the goods with you. If even one item from a receipt is missing, nothing on that receipt is refunded. Food or cosmetics you’ve used in Japan don’t qualify.
- The refund: comes from the shop or its refund company, not from customs. Ask the shop how it pays before you buy.
Verdict: keep big Japan purchases in your cabin bag, and reach the airport early; if you run out of time for the kiosk, you lose the refund.
Hyatt: elite nights for dining in India
- The offer: 1 tier-qualifying night for every US$1,000 (about ₹94,400) spent on food and drinks at participating Hyatt hotels, up to 10 nights.
- Where: India, mainland China, Korea, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
- Dates: register and spend between 27 Oct and 18 Dec 2026.
- Rules: it’s targeted, so check for it in the Hyatt app. Give your World of Hyatt number at the restaurant and pay there; charges to a hotel room don’t count.
Verdict: too expensive for a normal dinner, but useful if you’re hosting a wedding dinner, family function or office party at a Hyatt in India this season. Put it on your World of Hyatt number and the nights count towards status. More in our World of Hyatt guide for Indians.
Qatar Airways and WestJet: one ticket to more of Canada
- The news: Qatar Airways now puts its code on WestJet flights from Toronto and Montreal to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Regina, Saskatoon, St. John’s and Winnipeg.
- More flights: Qatar now flies daily to both Toronto and Montreal, up from 12 flights a week, since 25 October.
- For India: you can now book India–Doha–Toronto–Calgary, say, on one Qatar ticket.
- Points: Qatar hasn’t said whether Avios earn on the WestJet flights. Check before you count on it.
Verdict: good news for families visiting western Canada. Qatar’s Diwali sale (up to 30% off to the Americas, book by 10 Nov) may cover these tickets; see our Diwali sale post.
Turkish Airlines: 1,923 bonus status miles, booking 29 Oct only
- The offer: book in the Turkish Airlines app on 29 October 2026 (Türkiye time) for travel from 1 Jan to 31 May 2027, and get 1,923 extra Status Miles, once per member.
- Rules: Turkish-operated flights only, not codeshares or Star Alliance partners. Add your Miles&Smiles number before you fly. Credited within 7 days of the flight.
Verdict: status miles only, not award miles. Worth it only if you’re already booking Turkish for early 2027 and want help towards status.
DealUni take: Japan is the one to remember: shop the same, but keep your bags with you until the kiosk. Japan mein shopping karo, par bag check-in kiosk ke baad. (Shop in Japan, but check in your bag only after the kiosk.)
Sources: Japan Tourism Agency: the refund method; Japan Customs: tax refund at departure; Qatar Airways: codeshare with WestJet (26 Oct 2026); Turkish Airlines: 1,923 Status Miles; World of Hyatt: tier-qualifying nights offer. Checked 28 Oct 2026.
