Axis Burgundy Below the Bar: ₹708 a Month From 1 Dec
Updated as of 30 Oct 2026. From Axis Bank’s notice on savings account charges and its email to Burgundy customers, both dated 30 Oct 2026, and Axis Bank’s Burgundy eligibility page. All charges are plus 18% GST. Miles valued at ₹1.15.
From 1 December 2026, falling below Burgundy’s balance rules will cost you money. Until now, Axis didn’t charge Burgundy savings accounts that missed the criteria. From December, they pay the same monthly fee as a basic EASY ACCESS account, the account stops earning EDGE Reward points, and a bounced cheque costs ₹200. If you keep Burgundy mainly for the Magnus for Burgundy card, here’s what staying below the bar now costs and when it’s still worth it.
What changes on 1 December
- Fee for missing the criteria: charged as per the EASY ACCESS savings account schedule, which is 6% of the shortfall, capped at ₹600 a month (₹708 with GST). Before, no fee applied.
- Full TRV needed: the Total Relationship Value test moves from 75% of the required level to 100%. A ₹22.5 lakh TRV no longer passes; you need the full ₹30 lakh.
- EDGE Reward points on the account: discontinued. The Burgundy debit card already stopped earning EDGE points on 1 September.
- Bounced cheque you issued: ₹200 each time, up from ₹50 for the first and ₹100 after that.
- NRI Burgundy only: the charge for undelivered bank letters, cards and cheque books goes from ₹50 to ₹500 each.
Other Axis accounts are hit too
Axis’s notice covers more than Burgundy. From 1 December:
| Change | Accounts | Now | From 1 Dec |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRV needed to keep your account tier | Prime, Prestige, Priority, Sampann, Advantage, ARISE Women’s and Burgundy (resident and NRI) | 75% of the requirement | 100% |
| EDGE Reward points on the account | Burgundy, Priority, Prestige, Prime NRI and Easy NRI | Earned | Discontinued |
| Bounced cheque you issued | Almost all savings accounts, from Easy Access to Burgundy | ₹50 first, ₹100 after | ₹200 each |
| Free cash deposits and withdrawals at branches | Easy Access, Krishi and Sahaj | 4 a month or ₹1 lakh | 3 a month or ₹1 lakh |
| Fee for missing the minimum balance | Easy Access (not salary accounts) | 6% of shortfall, capped ₹600 metro/urban, ₹300 semi-urban, ₹150 rural | 6% of shortfall, capped ₹600 everywhere |
| Undelivered bank items returned | NRI Burgundy, Priority, Prestige and Prime | ₹50 each | ₹500 each |
If you’re on Priority or Prestige, the same two hits apply to you: your TRV now has to be at 100% of your tier’s requirement, and the account stops earning EDGE points.
The Burgundy bar: meet any one
| Route | What you need |
|---|---|
| Average monthly balance (AMB) | ₹10 lakh, counted across your customer ID or family ID |
| Total Relationship Value (TRV) | ₹30 lakh (savings, FDs and other Axis balances) |
| TRV with demat holdings | ₹1 crore |
| Salary | Net salary credit above ₹3 lakh a month into an Axis salary account |
The easiest fixes: link family members’ Axis accounts under one family ID so the balances add up, or move money into an Axis FD so your TRV reaches ₹30 lakh while still earning FD interest.
What being below the bar costs
The fee is 6% of the shortfall, capped at ₹600 a month. Say your average balance is ₹6 lakh: the shortfall from ₹10 lakh is ₹4 lakh, 6% of that is ₹24,000, so you pay the cap of ₹600, or ₹708 with GST. Anyone short by ₹10,000 or more pays the full ₹708 a month, which is about ₹8,500 a year.
Axis’s email doesn’t say which balance the shortfall is measured against, and doesn’t say whether accounts below the bar will still be moved down to Priority. Ask your relationship manager both before 1 December.
Is Burgundy still worth it below the bar?
The account itself now gives you little for points: no EDGE points on the account or the debit card, and lounge visits on the debit card depend on spending. The reason to keep Burgundy is the Magnus for Burgundy card, which turns EDGE points into more airline miles than regular Magnus.
The break-even: ₹8,500 a year is about 7,400 miles at ₹1.15 each. If Magnus for Burgundy gets you more than 7,400 extra miles a year compared with regular Magnus, paying the fee is cheaper than losing the card. At 5 EDGE points to 2 miles on Magnus for Burgundy against 5 to 1 on regular Magnus, the rates Axis moved to on 23 September for most airline partners, that means transferring roughly 37,000 EDGE points a year or more. Check the current rate for your partner on Axis Travel EDGE before you decide. Heavy spenders transferring big batches clear that easily; someone transferring once in a while doesn’t.
What to do
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Above the bar on any route | ✅ Nothing changes, except the lost EDGE points and the ₹200 cheque charge |
| Between 75% and 100% of the ₹30 lakh TRV | ⚠️ Top up to ₹30 lakh with an FD before 1 December, or link family accounts |
| Below the bar, transferring 37,000+ EDGE points a year on Magnus for Burgundy | ✅ Paying about ₹8,500 a year can still make sense; confirm with your RM that you keep the card |
| Below the bar, little or no Magnus for Burgundy use | ❌ Ask to move to Priority or a cheaper account rather than pay ₹708 a month |
| Issuing cheques often | ⚠️ Keep enough balance; each bounce now costs ₹236 with GST |
